Gametogenesis is the biological process through which primordial germ cells are transformed into mature gametes—sperm in males and ova in females. This process involves mitosis, meiosis, and cellular differentiation, making it a core topic in embryology and frequently tested in MBBS and USMLE Step 1 exams.

Primordial germ cells originate early in embryonic life and migrate to the developing gonads. In males, these cells undergo spermatogenesis within the seminiferous tubules of the testes. Spermatogonia divide mitotically and then undergo meiosis to form haploid spermatids, which further differentiate into motile spermatozoa. This process begins at puberty and continues throughout life.

In females, oogenesis begins during fetal development. Primary oocytes are arrested in prophase I until puberty. During each menstrual cycle, a selected oocyte resumes meiosis to form a secondary oocyte, which is arrested in metaphase II and completes meiosis only after fertilization. This results in one mature ovum and polar bodies.

Hormonal regulation by FSH and LH plays a critical role in both processes, ensuring proper gamete formation and reproductive function.
